The Nordics gave an extra dimension to Trimble Dimensions 2018

Trimble´s ninth International User Conference in Las Vegas was a big success, not least Nordic-wise.

The Trimble Dimensions conference is held every two years. In 2018, from November 5-7 a record 4,800 participants from 96 countries attended the event in Las Vegas.

600 sessions
The conference is one of the world's largest of its kind and covers an overwhelming spectrum of professional domains and industries. A total of 600 highly relevant program sessions addressed not only themes and trends in design, construction and operation of buildings, facilities and infrastructure but also technology areas such as geospatial, photogrammetry, mapping, scanning, surveying, monitoring, autonomy and GIS. Technical solutions for forestry, agriculture, transport and logistics were also showcased.

In addition, on a 14-hectare outdoor area participants could experience live operation of more than 60 construction machines and accessories – including demonstrations of the latest news in autonomous construction machines

“It was an impressive conference in every aspect, both in terms of scope, implementation and usefulness. Really an experience. However, with so many parallel sessions, it was a challenge to attend everything you wanted, so you had to prioritize what suited best.”

BIM Level 3
Trimble´s Norwegian office was responsible for the overall BIM Level 3 program for infrastructure, the theme that is crucial for future design and construction of civil infrastructure. This highly relevant BIM agenda focused on the unique combination of BIM in the office and BIM in the field. Europe`s Nordic region is in fact leading the developments in this area, so here the Nordic efforts were very prominent.

Leading the BIM way
In addition to several presentations from Trimble´s professionals in Norway, Nye Veier's project director, Øyvind Moshagen, presented the national road client´s demands and goals for using BIM Level 3. Norway is known to be at the forefront of this. Other presenters included ViaNova Plan and Traffic's Andreas Haugbotn, COWI's Magnus Jacob Christensen and ÅF Engineering`s Anders Høie.

Haugbotn from ViaNova gets credit because he is always an early adopter and challenger of Trimble´s technology, Christensen and COWI for their cross-border and cross-company collaboration using Trimble Quadri on an E18 road section, and Høie and ÅF for their use of Trimble Quantm to find the optimal road line in a Swedish road project.

Well satisfied
Katrin Johannesdottir, a senior advisor in digitalization, VDC and BIM, and one of several participants from Skanska Norway, summarizes Dimensions 2018 as follows:

“It was an impressive conference in every aspect, both in terms of scope, implementation and usefulness. Really an experience. However, with so many parallel sessions, it was a challenge to attend everything you wanted, so you had to prioritize what suited best.”

“It was also nice to see the development of Novapoint, Quadri and Tekla internationally, but also interesting to get acquainted with solutions that have not reached Norway for various reasons. In fact, some of them may be interesting for Skanska. For example, SiteVision which we got demonstrated outside on the machinery site, where we spent half a day.”

“It was also nice to experience that Norway and the Nordic countries really are a leader in BIM for infrastructure. It was interesting to hear the Nordic presentations in this area.”

“All in all, I think we got great value from the trip over there. You get a professional boost whilst meeting diverse people in the same situation and exchanging thoughts and experiences.”

The next Dimensions conference, Trimble Dimensions 2020 will be held in Nashville, Tennessee, November 2-4 2020.
